We kicked off this month’s showcase of rising African fashion designer, Mimi Plange, with her high-drama “Namaya” mermaid gown. Undoubtedly a showstopper (and a personal favorite)! But this delicate emerald sequin and hand-beaded gown is equally stunning and regal.
Mimi draws her creative inspiration from Victorian clothing and her native Africa, but interestingly enough I see a strong Asian influence in her work. Her clean and minimalist lines combined with the opulence of the silk and hand embellishments she uses extensively as well as her bold color combinations… Are all reminiscent to me of the exquisite traditional Japanese aesthetic I love so much.

Can’t imagine the time and effort that was put for that exquisite bead work! That gown must cost a lot!
