While Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking is commonly credited for single-handedly popularizing tuxedo suits for women in the mid sixties, ladies sporting men’s black tie attire (complete with top hat) were all the rage as far back as the twenties and thirties. If you really wanna know how it’s done, check out Marlena Dietrich in her American debut films, Morocco and Blonde Venus. The outrageous gorilla-themed get up with gigantic blonde afro wig showcased in her Blonde Venus iconic nightclub scene is understandably a scene-stealer, but she’s beyond alluring in a “toned-down” all-white men’s tux look (complete with those higharched brows and inimitable German accent).
I confess I lean on the tomboy boy side (and routinely like to rock womenswear) so this Mimi Plange tuxedo-inspired ensemble hit the sweet spot. Plus I love Mimi’s haute glam interpretation of the menswear turned womenswear attire. The golden color palette and stunning hand-beaded tuxedo stripe pants with matching three quarter length jacket… It’s a riveting modern take on an old classic.
